The project begins with Yezi’s invitation from artist collective Display Distribute to take on the role of a “slow courier.” Wearing a pair of specially made shoes, she carried two bottles of China-produced Hoegaarden beer to a project space in Belgium. These shoes, handmade within China’s manufacturing networks, feature inverted soles—a trick swapping the heel and sole to mislead customs officers—historically used along the Belgium–Netherlands border so authorities would follow smugglers’ tracks in the wrong direction. During the journey of delivery, there were many accidents that went beyond what was originally planned. Yezi was once warned not to shoot. In doing so, the project recalls historical tales of smuggling shoes but also revealing the contradictions of production, identity, and circulation in the networked present.
